Staddle stones, also known as settle stones, mushroom stones, stone mushrooms, or pad stones, have a long history. Originally, farmers used them to support structures such as grain stores, storage sheds, and farm buildings. Their clever design added both style and function, because raising a building off the ground kept the goods inside safe from pests and damp.

Today, sandstone staddle stones are far more than relics from the past. Instead, they work as both practical and decorative features in modern construction. As a result, they have become especially popular for premium oak structures, including houses, garages, outdoor rooms, offices, porches, and gazebos.

We craft our staddle stones from natural British sandstone rather than precast or reconstituted stone. Consequently, they offer superior strength for weight-bearing applications and need no curing time before use. Furthermore, the durability and character of the sandstone ensure that every finished structure looks reliable and striking, while it blends naturally with its surroundings.

Stainless Steel Dowels for Oak Staddle Stones

At JB Stone Masonry, we know the strength and durability of your oak structures really matter. Therefore, we supply stainless steel dowels to fix oak posts securely to our staddle stones. Each dowel measures 12mm in diameter and 150mm in length, and we make it to last. Furthermore, stainless steel resists rust extremely well.

A mild steel dowel, by contrast, will eventually rust and expand, which can split the oak post or the stone. Our stainless steel dowels stay rust-free, so both the oak and the staddle stone remain intact. As a result, this small investment, priced at £3.80 each including VAT, prevents costly damage later on. Ultimately, we would rather protect your project from the start than see it fail over time.

Our standard staddle stones come in three natural stone colours. In addition, we offer them in a range of sizes to match your oak posts, as well as in two standard heights. They form part of our wider natural stone masonry supply range.

We offer two standard heights (225mm and 300mm) and produce staddle stones for five different oak sizes ranging from 100mm to 200mm. (Non-standard sizes are available on request.) Our Non-Standard Sized Staddle Stones

Every project is different, so alongside our standard range we also make custom staddle stones tailored to your exact needs.

When filling out the form, please give us the following measurements, based on the diagram:

•A – Oak size: the timber post that will sit on top.

•B – Base size: only needed if you do not want the standard 25mm chamfer.

•C – Stone height: the overall height of the staddle stone.

Custom Shape & Finish Options

Beyond the standard designs, we also produce non-standard staddle stones, including:

•Three-sided designs for placement against a wall.

•Two-sided designs for corner installations or between garage doors.

•Tapered staddle stones for a more distinctive look.

We can also adjust the chamfering and leave fewer than four sides chamfered if you prefer. In addition, we offer hand-tooled, aged, or antique finishes for extra character. Alternatively, for a softer look, we can supply staddle stones with moulded edges.

Shipping prices start at £84 per pallet (including VAT), with the final cost depending on weight and location. When Cast Stone Fails

Cast or reconstituted stone are cement-based products, mixed with colour pigments and moulded to imitate stone, so how strong a piece really is comes down to how well a batch was made. Quality varies from one manufacturer to the next, and a piece let down by too much water, a poor mix, or curing that was cut short can end up weaker than it looks, with little to show on the surface. Solid natural sandstone has no mix to get wrong and no curing to rush, so it never carries those risks.

A customer sent us this photo of a pre-cast staddle stone that had split under the weight of their oak structure. We cut solid natural sandstone replacements as a retrofit, each matched to size and supplied with a stainless steel dowel, ready to bear the load straight away.

For anything load-bearing, there’s no substitute for solid natural stone.
