Stone copings

Stone copings cap the top of a wall and take the weather so the wall beneath doesn’t have to. Left uncapped, the top of a brick or masonry wall soaks up rainwater, which then drives frost damage, staining and slow erosion of the joints. A coping sheds that water clear of the face with a weathered (sloping or curved) top and an overhanging drip groove, the detail that sets a true coping apart from a flush wall capping.

We make copings to any profile you need. A flat coping suits a simple contemporary wall; a once-weathered coping slopes to one side; and a twice-weathered or saddleback coping falls to both sides from a central ridge, the traditional choice for a free-standing garden or boundary wall. Working from your drawings we can cut any section or moulded profile to order, with a drip groove on the underside so water can’t track back to the face.

All our copings are cut from solid, UK-sourced red and buff British sandstone, never reconstituted or precast stone. Solid sandstone is stronger, weathers honestly and ages in keeping with the building around it.

Every run is made to order, cut to your sizes and design. For restoration and listed-building work we can copy existing copings closely, matching the section, the weathering and the finish so new stone sits comfortably alongside the old. For new builds we will work from your drawings or help you settle on a profile that suits the wall.

Copings can be made in long runs, with ends, returns and angles cut to fit, and drilled for dowels or cramps where the fixing calls for it. If you can send sizes, a sketch or a photo of the wall, we can quote accurately.

Copings Under Oak Porches

We design and cut a lot of our copings specifically to sit under oak porches. The oak frame usually sits on brick piers, and a buff sandstone coping caps each pier, finishing the brickwork, throwing rainwater clear of it, and giving the oak posts a flat, solid stone to sit on.

Buff sandstone is the natural choice here. Its warm colour sits well against green oak and weathers in step with the timber as it silvers down. We cut the caps to suit the pier size and the porch.

We supply these caps direct to homeowners as well as to the oak-frame companies and builders who put the porches up. Send the pier sizes, a sketch or a photo and we’ll quote.
